Eyewitness Testimony and Memory Biases
How memory works, and how it fails
Confidence does not equal accuracy (in others and yourself)
Question human memory
Eyewitness Testimony
Mistaken eyewitness evidence can lead to wrongful conviction
Faulty eyewitness testimony has been the reason of almost 75% of DNA exoneration cases. More than any other cause
Case of Ronald Cotton
After 10 years, the truth came out
The victim was SURE it was him, but turns out it wasnt
Excellent case of Eyewitness Testimony and its faults
Watch out for misinformation effects with psychology!!!
Misinformation effect
Occurs when incorrect information is obtained after an event, which now contaminates our actual memory of that event!
In social situations, recalling the memory actually messes up the true facts. Alters our memory when talking to it to new people.
Different witnesses, different perspectives!
Identifying perpetrators
Identify faces and details of perpretators
Describe the suspect or pick them up from a lineup
Can cause errors for many reasons
All perpetrators must be in a similar setting and such
In order for the person finding the perpetrator to not have any bias at all. Such as being afraid, it was too dark, it was a long time ago, etc.
I did not know talking with others makes the event/memory worse. In fact, I thought it made it better. Now I must be very aware of whom I shared this memory with I speak to about my closest significant memories as I do not want them to be blurred.
It makes sense now how me and someone who had the same memory have such different stories of it. Because of perspectives. I remember me and my friend both swearing that the memory went a certain way. With both of us being absolutely sure that this is how it happened. Now I know that it is because we both have different perspectives on how we see things.
It is kind of disheartining to hear that some of the memories I have are not even real. Some of them didn't happen, or didn't happen the way I Imagine it to be. It is also liberating tho. As now I know, some bad memories were not as bad as they seemed.
