INORGANIC INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS
ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY (AAS): CAPABLE OF DETECTING PPM AND PPB CONC OF METAL IN SOLUTION. METALS LIKE AL, PB AND CO ACCUMULATE IN HUMANS ANDC CAUSE SIGNIFICANT HEALTH ISSUES INCLUDING CNS DEGRADATION AND AND OSTEOPOROSIS
HOW DOES IT WORK?:
ELEMENT IS DETERMINED. E.G. SOIL SAMPLE SUSPECTED CONTAINING Hg, THEN Hg WILL ONLY BE TESTED FOR. HG CATHODE LAMP IS SELECTED AND INSERTED INTO THE AAS SETUP.
ELECTRICAL CURRENT CAUSES THE HG IN THE LAMP TO EMIT ITS UNIQUE SPECTRUM OF LIGHT AND THIS LIGHT IS DIRECTED AT THE VAPORISED SAMPLE IN THE FLAME.
SAMPLE IN THE FLAME IS ATOMISED AND IF ANY HG IS IN THE SAMPLE, SOME OF THE LIGHT FROM THE LAMP WILL BE ABSORBED BY THESE ATOMS ALONE.
LIGHT PASSES THROUGH SLIT AND MONOCHROMATOR WHICH SELECTS A SINGLE WAVELENGTH OF LIGHT FOR ANALYSIS, THIS IS ANALYSED BY THE DETECTOR AND DISPLAYED AS A NUMBER (ABSORBANCE NUMBER), PROPORTIONAL TO CONC.
IF CONC OF HG IN SAMPLE IS HIGH, A LOT OF LIGHT WILL BE ABSORBED AND NOT MUCH WILL GET THROUGH.
CATHODE LAMPS EMIT A SPECIFIC WAVELENGTH OF LIGHT THAT MATCHES THE ION THAT IS BEING MEASURED FROM THE SAMPLE.
