Divisions of the Nervous System - Coggle Diagram
Divisions of the Nervous System
Peripheral NS
Autonomic NS
Parasympathetic Branch
Returns the body to a normal/balanced state eg. slows heart rate
opposite action to the sympathetic branch (antagonistic)
Tries to store & conserve resources once emergency has passed
Sympathetic Branch
Biological changes which prepare the body for activity eg. increased heart rate
SLOWS down other non essential processes that consume energy eg. digestion
When exposed to threats ACTIVATED & prepares the body for rapid action
Many of its functions are
‘automatic’
Responsible for functions that keep the body in a stable state -
homeostasis
Somatic NS
sensory and motor neurons
receives information from the CNS that directs muscles to act
carrying sensory and motor information to and from the spinal cord
transmits messages via millions of neurons
sends information to the CNS from the outside world
transmits messages from the CNS to muscles and glands in the body
Central NS
Spinal Cord
an extension of the brain
responsible for simple reflex actions
transfers messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body
Brain
centre of all conscious awareness
Passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the Peripheral NS
