TASK 3
Acute Injuries
Caused as a result of sudden trauma / impact (to the body) / an injury that results in immediate pain or swelling or loss of function.
-
-
-
-
Acute injuries can be separated into those that affect the soft tissue and those that affect the hard tissue
Soft tissue injuries: Injuries to the muscles, tendons and ligaments
Most common acute soft tissue injuries are the result of sudden unexpected or uncontrolled movement such as slipping awkwardly or rolling over on the ankle (sprain)
Soft tissue injuries are common in most sports because the sport applies forces to muscles, tendons and ligaments.
-
Most common acute hard tissue injuries are the result of sudden collision with people or equipment including fractures and dislocations
-
-
Chronic injuries are a lot more common than acute injuries.
Chronic injuries usually occur over time, which makes them difficult to diagnose and treat.
Chronic injuries are those that are caused by continuous or repeated stress on an area of the body such as a bone, muscle, ligament or tendon.
