Benefits of Using Songs
Enhance Listening Skills
Elaboration: Listening is the first stage of language learning and provides the input from which learners build their understanding of a foreign language. Songs give learners a clear purpose for listening and keep them active throughout the task by requiring physical responses (e.g., lifting hands at key phrases). This active engagement reduces boredom, sharpens focus, and helps children develop both passive and selective listening skills.
Example: In a “Listen and Do” song with the instruction “wake up,” students listen for that cue and raise their hands when they hear it—reinforcing their ability to tune in to specific words in the lyrics.
