Ecology Project :
Ecological Relationships
There are many benefits of relationships. One type of relationship is commensalism. Commensalism is between 2 or more species where 1 species benefits and the others are not affected. An example of this is vultures. They are scavengers. They eat things like road kill and other dead animals. This benefits them because they get food and it doesn't affect anyone else because the animal is already dead.
Claim: All organisms play a role in interacting with eachother.
Predator prey relationships help to maintain balance. Foxes and rabbits are a great example of this. If there is not a lot of rabbits there won’t be a lot of foxes because they have not as much options for rabbits to feast on. If there is a lot of rabbits then there will be a lot of foxes because they have way more food. A lot of rabbits means a lot of foxes.
Ecosystem engineers are things that make microhabitats in their ecosystem. An example is beavers. They make there dams in the water creating a micro habitat in the ecosystem. There dams also prevent floods which can help the ecosystem.
Connection: Putting a Starbucks in a town is like how beavers are ecosystem engineers. When you put a Starbucks in people start going creating a micro habitat. The dams are like other coffee shops because usually they will stay away from Starbucks because it is a coffee shop.
Matter and Energy
Matter cannot be created or destroyed it can only be rearranged. The matter that is on earth right now is the same that was there when the earth was created. Matter gets moved around by energy being used by people or things. An example of this is the water cycle. When it rains the water is falling from the sky. If that water falls into the ocean it is now part of the ocean. When the sun shines on that drop of water again it evaporates out of the water into the sky. It then becomes a cloud which then when it gets full again will rain.
Connection: The pyramid of the trophic levels are kind of like the people who go to starbucks. The primary are the people who rarely go to starbuck. Those could be non-coffee drinkers, people who think that small coffee shops are better, or they live in smaller towns. The secondary is people who go there sometimes. They think that starbucks is ok but put other coffee shops before it and drink coffee a lot but don't prefer it. The apex predators are people who love starbucks. They go all of the time and they are very specific on what they drink. I would consider myself in between secondary and apex because I don't go to Starbucks everyday but I am obsessed with it.
Trophic Levels are like the steps in a food web. There are primary then secondary then tertiary and finally the apex predators. Primary is herbivores these are animals that only eat plants. Secondary is the carnivores they eat the herbivores. Tertiary are animals that eat the carnivores, and apex are the ones that eat carnivores and have nothing that is hunting them they are on the top of the food chain or the steps.
Sulfur is important because all living things need it to be able to make protein. Plants get it from the soil, animals get it through their diets (mainly high protein foods). With lacks of protein you will have a weakened immune system, and dry or unhealthy skin/fur. With too much the environments can become toxic, acid rains and interference of other minerals. There is sulfur in the air, in the water, and soil.
Claim:Energy and matter move through all the places in the ecosystem and get recycled every time.
Introduction
Claim: Ecology is very diverse and there are many things that affect it
My connection is Starbucks. I chose this because I like Starbucks a lot and I got there a lot and I know about it.
Biodiversity
Claim: Biodiversity it important because it allows for species to grow and change.
Levels of Complexity all come down to one organism and then it all gets bigger from that organism. For example it goes from an individual to population to community to an ecosystem. The example I wrote in my notebook is a fish. First you have one fish, then a school of fish, then an ocean community with all the things in the water, and lastly everything so how the sun and moon can affect the ocean and the land near by.
If we get rid of species there will be pros and cons just like if we got rid of mosquitos. If we got rid of them you wouldn't have pests sucking your blood, but we don't know what exactly would happen to the ecosystem if we got rid of them completely and it would be kind of hard to reverse.
Connection: Starbucks refreshers are like genetic diversity. Personally my favorite drink is a strawberry acai refresher with lemonade peach juice and no berries. There is genetic diversity because I add things to my drink to change it and if Mabel get it without peach juice and instead of lemonade does coconut milk then she would have a similar drink of the same 'species' just not the same type. As that drink would have branched off and maybe started to change the genetics.
Genetic Diversity is the different mutations within a population of a species, which then will increase their ability to change. When populations are genetically diverse they have a way better chance to adapt to their environments. An example of the genetic diversity is the birds. The first American gold finch has different markings on the tail than the second one. This is an example of genetic diversity because the tail feathers on the first one are helping it to blend in more. This causes it to have a better chance to survive because the species was able to adapt.
Reflection
The best thing I learned about ecology was the genetic diversity with the finches. I liked that because it explained how we got other species and I thought it was pretty cool.
I am still curious about genetic diversity but more of how other animals changed from others like bears and foxes.
My understanding of ecology has changed because I learned that animals and plants are tied in different ways and connected through different organisms.
I think the survival skill that has improved the most is 20 minutes. I think this because is I have track most days so I leave early and have to get my work done.

This is a picture of the map of the Starbucks in Waverly as you can see there are not any coffee shops near it.
That is two strawberry acai refreshers the one is Quinns that I got him and it has berries and no peach juice where mine is the lighter one that has peach juice and no berries.
That is one of the starbucks I had a few weeks ago. I took this picture because I liked the writing and I thought it looked cute.
This is a screen shot from the Mosiqtos video I thought it was intresting and ties to genetic diversity
This is a picture of my dad getting Starbucks and sending me his review of it on Snapchat. He went because he wondered why I get it so much and went to try it. I consider him in-between and primary and secondary starbucks goer.
