'The main reason why alliances were formed among western powers in the period 1945-55 was
soviet aggression’
NATO VS SEATO
NATO - General Lord Ismay said NATO was designed to 'Keep the Russians out, Americans in and Germany down'
Article 5, if one nation attacks a NATO member, all other NATO members must provide support
One of the main implications from the establishment of NATO was greater US presence in Europe, NATO created justification for the establishment of further military bases in and around the European continent
France was against the idea of West Germany becoming a member of NATO as they feared it would be a risk to their national security. The FRG clearly had an alignment with Western ideals
-
Overall: Agree, the creation of NATO was clearly a decision made in response to Soviet aggression.
CAVEAT: The US did have a LOT of dominance over NATO, evidencing that this may be due to imperial interests
-
THE UN
The US, by no coincidence, dominated the UN - for example its headquarters have always been in NYC
Its membership established the dominance of the US as well, of the 50 original members, 20 were drawn from capitalist Central and South American states.
The members from the middle East were also pro-Western, namely, Iran, Iraq and Egypt
European empires in the 1950s were mostly intact and this limited the number of new members whilst ensuring that the USA had the support of these states because their imperial European allies were pro-Western
-
Overall: The purpose of the UN was to establish Western dominance over diplomacy, rather than to respond to Soviet aggression
