The Quran- the Holy book of Islam
Mohammad- the final prphet of Islam, believed by Muslims to have received God's message.
Gabriel- the angel who brought God's revelations to the prophet Mohammad.
Hadith-- sayings and actions by the Prophet Mohammad to guide Muslim life.
Sharia- Islamic law based on the Quran and Haith that guides many aspects of a Muslim life.
Theocracy- a government that is ruled by religious leaders of based on religious laws.
Abu Bakr- the first leader of a Musim community after Mohammad died.
Sunni- These Muslims believe that leadership should have stayed within the Prophet's family.
Sh'ia- a spiritual and mystical branch of Islam focused on a closed and personal connect with God.
Tawheed- means the belief in oneness of God.
Shirk- the sin of worshiping anyone or anything besides the one true God.
People of the Book- reflects on Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
The Five Pillars of Islam- the five basic acts of worship that all Muslims are expected to follow.
Shahadah- confession of faith, the declaration that there is no god by Allah.
Salat- daily prayer, 5 times, facing Mecca.
Zakat- charity, giving a portion of one's wealth to help the poor.
Sawm- Ramadan, fasting from sunrise to sunset.
Hajj- pilgrimage to Mecca, Muslims must try to make it once in their life.
Mecca- the Holy City, where Mohammad was born and the Kaba is located
Medina- the city where Mohammad established the first Muslim community after leaving Mecca.
Al-Kitab- "the book", referring to the Holy scriptures, especially the Quran.
Sufism- the focus on an inward search for God.
Jihad (struggle)- greater/less - lesser jihad is the physical struggle to defend Islam, greater is the internal struggle to live a good faithful life.
