Primary and Secondary Memory - Coggle Diagram
Primary and Secondary Memory
Primary memory is also called main memory.
Secondary memory includes storage like disks and tapes.
Both are types of auxiliary storage.
Programs are loaded from the hard drive (secondary storage) into RAM (primary memory) to be used by the processor.
Operating System Functions and Kernel Role
The text discusses the functions of an operating system, but doesn't use the term "kernel".
Operating systems control the computer's hardware.
If the operating system doesn't load, the computer can't be used.
Operating systems provide a Graphical User Interface (GUI).
Types of Software: System and Application Software
There are two main types of software: system software and application software.
System software controls the computer's operation.
Examples of system software are Windows, MSDOS, Linux, and OS/2.
Application software is designed for specific tasks like word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
Input, Output, and I/O Devices
Computer systems have input devices, processors, output devices, and auxiliary storage.
Input devices include things like microphones, bar code readers, scanners, and digital cameras.
Output devices can be sound, video, and plotters.
Computer Components and Interaction
The main components are input devices, the processor, output devices, and auxiliary storage.
These components are part of a 4-stage model: Input -> Processor -> Output, with auxiliary storage connected to the processor.
The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the "brain" and executes software.
