- - - - Radiation Injuries: Tons of radioactive stuff leaked out. People living close by got hit hard by radiation. Many got really sick with things like throwing up, losing hair, and bleeding inside.
      - Casualties: 31 people died right away after the explosion. Most were firefighters and plant workers trying to help. They got huge radiation doses and died fast.

Forests were dubbed “red forests” as their leaves turned red due to radiation, a large number of plants and animals died or mutated, and the ecological balance was severely damaged; the ecosystems in the region have not yet fully recovered.
