Researching IB PYP
Resources
Professional Development
IB PYP offers workshops, nanos are other methods of professional development opportunities.
I hold workshops on various aspects of PYP. I share videos, IB materials and we have IB instructors come talk to our teachers. Our teachers are Cat 1- Makjng the PYP Happen certified
Classroom Resources
IB PYP encourages open ended and materials. Our budget is tight but we do have some great learning resources and ask teachers and parents to bring in authentic learning materials from home.
The Learning Environment
In IB PYP the learning environment acts as the third teacher. Our school is constantly developing ours to be more engaging and student created
Leadership
Collaboration
IB depends on collaboration at all levels to consistently adapt to needs of all stakeholders and make necessary improvements. My school is doing much better in this area, collaboration meetings and PLCs, PTA meetings and PTCs.
Agency
Student Agency
Student agency refers to the level of control, autonomy, and power that a student experiences in their school.
Students at my school are given some agency however I would like to see more. Teachers need to trust their students to be capable and in the Early Years that can be difficult for some
Teacher Agency
IB centres around agency. Teachers are given a leadership role to support all stakeholders and be a part of our system constructively and consistently.
Communication
Effective communication in IB PYP is crucial. We aspire to provide various methods for accessible communication such as PTCs, surveys and workshops
Systems
Philosophies
-
Student- Centered
IB encourages student-centered learning so students take accountability in the own learning journey.
This philosophy contradicts the traditional style of teaching, our school is trying very hard to move away from this
Teaching and learning in the IB celebrates the many ways people work together to construct meaning and make sense of the world. An IB education empowers young people for a lifetime of learning, independently and in collaboration with others.
Scope and Sequence
IB PYP follows Scope and Sequence to build conceptual understanding
My school is moving in this direction but at the moment we are a bit product heavy
-
Pedagogical
Principles
IB PYP is rooted in 6 pedagogical principles- “based on inquiry”, “focused on conceptual understanding”, “developed in local and global contexts”, “focused on effective teamwork and collaboration”, “designed to remove barriers to learning” and “informed by assessment”
My teachers know these principles but the theory into practice is the more difficult part. We incorporate these principles into our collaboration meetings
