A company called Maple Leaf Foods supplies Tim's with all of its bacon supply. The buisness is purely Canadian. Another source of Tim Horton's bacon comes from various local farms that are supposeduly selected based off certain animal wellfare standards.
Buying local means better use of community market and competition while contributing to the Canadian economy.
Maple Leaf Foods strives to be a sustainable company and holds its standards high. It promotes a smaller ecological footprint while also having ethical practices in its production of goods.
In totality, the bacon is the most sustainable because of the use of a company that promotes sustainable practices. Because of this an the use of Canadian farms, the bacon is very well sourced.
Lettuce
Tim Horton's has not released what company or from where they source their lettuce yet. However, it is assumed that much of it is from local Canadian farms and growers. Another source says that Tim Hortons is still working towards becoming even more Canadian-sourced, so there is still a chance that this product is purchased internationally.
Locally sourced food reduces carbon emissions caused from shipping and transportations of these goods.
Buying from local copanies boosts the economy and enables the farmers to increase their aricultural ability.
Tim Horton's is a large company, and there's a possibility that they could be biased and only purhase goods from a select few farms, causing a gap between the wages of the selected and unselected farms.
A limit could be put on how much produce the company could purchase, leaving enough for the local companes but also keeping the working wages similar to promote healthy and fair competition.
Overall, there are many sustainable practices involving their lettuce sourcing that will continue to provide enough for the company while also replenishing their resources and benefitting the economy.
Throughout the winter months when no more lettuce can be grown, there's a chance that the previous supply could run low and they would have to resort to outsourcing.
By ensuring that some Canadian companies are supplied with greenhouses to grow the specific plants needed year-round.
Tomato
Depending on the season, Tim's tomatoes are sourced from either local or from close international farms. During the summer, it relies mostly on Heinz, who sources primarily from Ontario farms. However, throughout winter when we can not produce anything, Mexico and the US is traded with to get tomatoes.
This means that sometimes there is transportation and the pollution it comes with that is associated to this ingredient.
By making more greenhouses that are spread around Canada, tomatoes can be produced year round and will be closer to each individual Tim Hortons than always being shipped from Ontario.
Benefits large corporations like Heinz, who sources mostly locally instead of outsourcing from developing countries like other large transnational companies.
Because it is sourced locally, the jobs it presents are all in Canada, which has laws in place to protect worker's safety and rights instead of in sweatshops or harsh labour in third-world countries.
Taking all of these einto consideration, the tomatoes are mostly able to be grown in Canada. This means that most likely, majority of them are sourced from local Canadian farms, which means that this ingredient has a good sustainable sourcing.
Artisan Bun
Similar to the other ingredients, Tim Horton's doesn't specifically state what company they source their sandwich bread from. Some sources say that they source them from many different corporations including Bimbo Bakeries. Bimbo Bakeries is an American company which also extends with a Mexican chain. It has also been found that they buy their buns mostly done, but completely bake them in the individual Tim Hortons locations so the quality is consistent through all stores.
Bimbo Bakeries is a transnational corporations with operation in over 35 countries. By purchasing from this company, Tim Hortons promotes more transportation pollution and waste in general.
By abandoning this company and sourcing to either a smaller local one or attempting to entirely source from Canadian companies or farmers.
Bimbo bakeries has put many restrictions in place that protect their production methods from being wasteful or unsustainable.
With Canada being a heavy faming country, it can assumed that the other sources that provide Tims with buns are mostly local since the company strives to buy most of their ingredients from Canadian corporations and farmers.
Overall, the buns are not as sustainable as the rest of the ingredients and could use more local company involvement.
