Social Media and the “Read-Only” Web
1010 Project
VISIONS
The aim is to construct a "global online portrait" through user-generated content (UGC), regarding the Internet as a public discussion space, and emphasizing social interaction and user co-presence.
It aimed "to make it intriguing and enjoyable enough so that they would not only explore it, but actively participate in it," and to foster "thoughtful contributions."

FAILURES
Public think it's way too experimental
It's an ameteur photography contest - Smolan (lack of quality control)
“The sheer volume of email flying off the printers made it impossible to read everything… MIT didn’t have the resources to edit, organize, and curate this material.”

TECHNICAL FEATURES
“recalls the direct address toward an anonymous mass audience, mediated through print or broadcasting channels that do not register the activity of users” (Ankerson 2015, 2)
A "system could automatically generate HTML web pages at the click of a button and it was this form of automation that inspired organizers to understand this event as “real-time photojournalism on a global scale.”” (Ankerson 2015, 9)

VISIONS
"The web was a vehicle for delivering a publication to an imagined audience” (Ankerson 2015, 2).
“This method of inviting audiences behind-the-scenes is one way the project aimed to establish authority by separating media professionals from an audience of listeners and readers.” (Ankerson 2015, 8)
FAILURES
The 24 Hours in Cyberspace wasn’t really live, because the event was planned in advance, not actually showing what is happening in real life time. Also It ignored a big law about online speech, so people criticized it for missing what really mattered online that day.
