King Lear, Characters and traits, Lear - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Edgar is forced into being a mad beggar using the name "Poor Tom" this allows him to go undetected and even leads him to join up with Lear as he is wandering in the storm, later Edgar reunite with his father after his brother turns on their father and has him blinded
        
        Gloucester askes Poor Tom to lead him to a cliff so he may kill himself, not wanting his father to die but not wanting to reveal his identity Edgar leads him to a "cliff" where Gloucester jumps and falls, Edgar then pretends to be a new person and tells Gloucester that it was the devil who lead him to that cliff and the gods who saved him
        
        Edgar finally reveals to his father his identity shortly before he dies after the French loses the battle, Edgar also challenges and kills his evil brother Edmund and tells him of their fathers passing this leads to Edmund trying to repent and save Cordelia but it is too late. Edgar lives till the end of the play and rules with Albany
  - - - Kent also serves as our link to Cordelia in the middle of the story as it is revealed that he is in contacted with Cordelia and she is planning on rescuing her father and reclaiming his kingdom
        
        Kent stays with Lear as he falls more and more to his madness, he leads him and helps were he can. When Lear dies in the last scene Kent leaves soon after saying he can't keep his master waiting any longer, this shows Kent's loyalty and love towards Lear even after all he has gone through
  - - - Cordelia returns to the kingdom not to conquer, but to save her father from her evil sisters, Cordelia holds not resentment towards her father and only wishes for his well being, this puts her at odds with her two sisters who want Lear dead
        
        While only trying to the right thing and help her father this leads to her death at the hands of Edmund who calls for her and Lear's execution but is only successful in poor Cordelia case, this leads to Lear's heartbreak and death
  - - - This allows Edmund more time to get evidence of Gloucester's support of Lear which leads to him being blinded and thrown out to wander and get himself killed, in this moment it is not only revealed to Gloucester of his son Edmund's betrayal but his abandonment of his real son,
        
        While Gloucester is wander blindly around the forest he comes across Poor Tom, Edgar, who he askes to help take his life, Edgar uses this time to help his father regain his will to live by faking his saving by the gods. This shows Gloucester a new view point on life, While resting in a safe space away from the battle Edgar runs up and tells Gloucester that the French have lost, as they try escape Gloucester dies of exhaustion
  - - - While staying with Goneril, Lear has a group of 100 knights with him at all times, Goneril calls for him to reduce it to 50, this angers Lear, he curses Goneril and goes to Regan, where the fool warns him that he will receive the same treatment, and this he does, when he arrives he finds his Messager in the stock at the order of Regan, this angary him as he sees it a disrespectful
        
        while arguing with Regan Goneril arrives and GR teams up with each to see how low the cane bring the number of knights Lear has, very similar to the love test with both sister trying to one up each other. This leaves Lear with none, this causes Lear to rush out into the storm, where he spends most of the rest of the play losing his minds to the disrespect and injustice the gods have serviced him
        
        When GR learn of Lear's survival and Cordelia's plan to help him through Edmund, who was told by Gloucester in confidence, they began to plan a opposition force. For his crimes against them Regan has Gloucester blinded but before Goneril is sent home with Edmund guiding her, while walking Goneril begins to lust for Edmund. Back with Regan as her husband, Cornwall, is about to take the second eye a servant attacks and mortal wounds him before dying Cornwall takes the second eye.
        
        When Goneril learns of Cornwall's death, she realises that Regan will steal Edgar from her and sends a letter with Oswald for Edmund, who is stopped by Edgar while he is protecting Gloucester from Oswald, Edgar takes the letter as proof. As the battle is about to began the lust that GR have for Edmund is causing problem as jealousy is forming between the two women. This comes to a head when after the battle is won, Goneril poisons Regan leading her to die of screen. After Edgar defeats and mortal wounds Edmund, Goneril runs off screen and kills herself with a knife
  - - - To gain this power Edmund tricks his father into believe that Edgar is planning to kill him, He also lies to Edgar says their father is angry at him so he should stayed arm, this all leads into his plan where he fakes a fight with his brother and gets his father to banish Edgar and sends out people to look for him. With Gloucester believing that Edmund is after saving him he puts all his trust and power into Edmund.
        
        As Regan and Cornwall are staying at Gloucester's palace Edmund is able to help both GR till leads to them trusting him and him gaining even more power. Edmund goes as far as betraying his father to gain more power as he reveals to GR that Gloucester was helping Lear till leads to Gloucester's blinding, Edmund is sent away to walk Goneril home, when they arrive Goneril tells Edmund of her love for him.
        
        After Cornwall's death it is reveal that Regan is also in love with Edmund and now as a widow is able to pursue him, this is a threat to Goneril who wants Edmund to herself, Edmund sees the opportunity for power so does not accept one. In the final scene Edmund is challenged by a mysterious foe, who after defeating Edmund reveals himself as Edgar, who tells of his fathers challenges and eventual death, as Edmund is dying he has a change of heart and tries to reveal the truth of Lear and Cordelia's fate but it is too late.
- - - - While power is seen as a destructive force throughout the play, we also get to see power's ability to be used for good through Cordelia's actions to help her father, she does this out of love for her father not for the possibility to gain power through it.
        
        We also witness the lose of power as a factor to 2 characters redemptions through Lear and Gloucester, after these characters lose their power they are throw to the wild where they learn of the every day struggle for their people, this allows them to become more insightful and repentant
  - - - we see the fake and destructive love through GR who use love as a means to gain power from their father to only turn around and betray him when they get their power. Even their love for each other is fake as they turn on each other when they both want Edmund and leads to their deaths. Gloucester's love for Edmund's mother is fake as he only saw her as intercourse and said there was "good sport" at Edmund's breeding
      - The good and honest is seen through the characters of Cordelia and Kent, we see both Characters get banished by Lear in the opening scene but both character stayed by Lear' side and helped him regain his sanity and kept him safe. The play ends with the three characters, Lear, Cordelia and Kent, ending up together in heaven. Edgar is another character who has good honest love, even after being banished by his father he recognizes that his father was tricked by his half brother and ends up helping his father when he comes across him walking blindly around, he helps him regain he grip on life and tries to keep himself during the battle.
