Inferring Causality

Illusions of Causality
Personal Agency
perception of whether we are in control of events around us - whether we actually have ctrl is irrelevant
-
-
link to LoC - both influence motivation, and personal agency sometimes described as strong internal LoC but NOT interchangeable concepts
depressive realism
-
-
Alloy and Abramson (1979) - depressed individuals believe have LOW causal agency - not in ctrl of events around them
analytical rumination hypothesis = suggests depression is ADVANTAGEOUS trait because response to COMPLEX problems, minimises disruption of rumination ie giving problems prioritised access to resources, decreased engagement with distracting stimuli
VS view that depression is maladaptive, claims depressive rumination helps ppl solve problems, depression as evolved response to complex problems

Contingency

Alloy and Abramson - NON-depressed pp's overestimated ctrl of light, depressed pp's did not - "sadder but wiser"
individuals not depressed motivated to maintain self-esteem - feelings accompanying lack of ctrl experienced with non-contingent actions are INCOMPATIBLE with motivation to KEEP self-esteem
