The skeletal muscles that are innervated contract to mediate movement. Axial muscles allow for movement of the trunk. Proximal muscles are responsible for the girdle and the movement of the shoulder, elbow, pelvis, and knees. The distal muscles control the hands, feet, fingers, and toes. Flexors cause limb flexion, while extensors cause limb extension.
Motor neurons controlling flexors lie dorsal to those controlling extensors. Axial muscles lie medially, and distal muscles lie laterally.
