Summary
• Mitch confronts Blanche, accusing her of lying about her age and innocence.
• Blanche, heavily drinking, tries to drown out the polka music that haunts her.
• Blanche admits the truth about her past, explaining how her lies were her way of coping, but when Mitch doesn’t understand, she gives him a blunt, provocative confession about her promiscuous behavior, meeting soldiers and lovers after the loss of Belle Reve.
• Mitch, disillusioned, declares he no longer wants to marry her but still seeks a physical relationship.
• In a desperate act, Blanche screams “Fire!” to frighten Mitch away.
