Before 1750
PreHistory
serious ilnesses were treated by 'medicine men'
illnesses had supernatural causes, such as vengful gods or evil spirits
they also had natural causes as an injury from hunting or an insect bite
the treatment was to use a combination of ritual, prayer, herbs and basic surgery
Middle Ages
The cristian church´s power had grown
1300s the church had set up universities where doctors could be trained
ta catastrophic epidemic called the black death spread from asia to europe. it killed over 40 per cent of the population
Doctors used a number of different tratments for illnesses
women were not permitted to go to university and could not train to be professional doctors
Greeks
From this developed the theory that was caused by having an imbalance of the four humours in your body
Doctors were trained to observe patients´ sytoms and then diagnose
