XENIA IN FANTASY
The cyclopes episode, Odysseus wants "gifts" and "cheese" and breaks into Polyphemus' home, this is poor Xenia as it is custom wait at the threshold of the person you are hoping to receive Xenia from.
The cyclopes episode book 9 is also engaging due to the cyclopes' extreme perversion of the rules of Xenia, he states he does not worship the gods and even "dashes Odysseus' men heads like puppies" whilst trapping them inside his cave
Edith Hall states that "the cyclopes episode is the worse possible Xenia as they both break all the rules of it"
In book 10 Odysseus encounters Aeolus a wind god who offers him good Xenia including a feast and and gift which was a bag filled with "silver wire to prevent any leakages" wind, "however his measures were doomed to failure, for we came to grief, though our own senseless stupidity."
Odysseus' men steal his bag and release the winds just off the shores of Ithaca, leading them back to Aeolus, he refuses Odysseus' men the second time. " your returning like this shows they detest you. Get out!"
