Personal Reflections
- Before we studied the functions of emotions, I didn’t fully realize how deeply emotions are tied to every part of our lives, from how we process thoughts to how we build relationships and navigate society. One idea that really stood out to me was how emotions prepare our body for action. The example of fear making our body ready to flee was something I could relate to, especially thinking back to times I felt anxious and didn’t understand why my body reacted the way it did.
- I also found the cultural aspect of emotions really meaningful. Coming from a multicultural household, I now understand why certain emotional expressions were accepted in one setting but discouraged in another. For example, anger was seen as disrespectful in my family, even when it was justified. This ties directly into the concept of “cultural display rules.”
- The “visual cliff” study with infants really made me reflect on how early we begin using emotional cues from others to make decisions. I realize now that even as adults, we still rely heavily on facial expressions and tone to see how to act. It made me more aware of how my own expressions might influence the people around me, even without saying a word. By girlfriend always says she can tell when something's wrong just my face even when i haven't said anything
