In 19777 Biko was arrested for breaking his banning order and beat to his death in custody. Police claimed it was due to hunger strike but Donald Woods, journalist and close friend of Biko, revealed the truth. In the wake of his death Helen Suzman said, "the world will not forget the Biko affair." Further, 10,000 people attended his funeral including international delegates and the UN unanimously adopted resolution 418, advocating a mandatory arms embargo on South Africa.
