Unit 10: Functions of Emotions
Technical Ideas
Introduction
Purpose of Emotions:
Tell us who we are.
Help us understand others.
Guide our social behavior.
Intrapersonal Functions
Prepare the Body for Action:
Fear: Dry mouth, blood to legs (run/flee).
Influence Thought:
Have effect on attitudes, values, and beliefs.
"Neural glue" for memory (happy memories when happy, angry thoughts when angry).
Motivate Behaviors:
Pursue positive emotions; escape negative ones.
Interpersonal Functions
Emotional Expressions:
Describe nature of relationship (e.g., smile predicts relationship success).
Encourage desired social behavior (e.g., smiling elicits approach).
Social Referencing:
Infants mimic caregivers' emotional reactions (e.g., visual cliff experiment: 75% crossed with glee; 0% crossed with fear).
Cross-Species Impact:
Dogs react to human anger/fear (e.g., cowering or barking in a fight).
Social & Cultural Functions
Culture's Role:
Transmits emotional meaning/rules (e.g., "display rules" for showing appropriately).
Shapes worldviews (values, norms placed on emotions).
Pop Culture Reflection:
Are we paying off unhealthy emotional expressions?
Societal values and emotional well-being impact.
Personal Reflections
Intrapersonal Awareness
Last week, I yelled at my brother over dishes when I was actually stressed about exams. I'm letting emotions get the best of me
My Action Plan:
Pause-Breathe-Label: When annoyed, I'll say out loud to myself: "I'm feeling [emotion] because [trigger]."
Emotion Journal: At the end of each day, I'll write:
1 feeling I strongly felt today.
How it affected my decisions.
Was this helpful or hurtful?
Interpersonal Relationships
My Observation:
My friend's 'resting sad face' makes me assume they're upset, and we also have pointless arguments.
My Action Plan:
Ask-Don't-Assume Rule: Instead of "Are you upset with me?", I'll say: "How are you feeling right now?"
Social Experiment: I'll reflect positive facial expressions (smiling/nodding) at strangers for one week and observe reactions.
Cultural Influences
As an immigrant, I swallow sadness because 'strong people don't cry', but this makes me get headaches
What I can do
Safe Space Practice: Cry at sad movies in private to get used to crying without shame.
Emotional Intelligence (EI)
My Weak Spot:
I ghost friends when I feel overwhelmed rather than having it out, this tend to hurts people I care about.
My Action Plan:
Template Messages: Write in advance for difficult moments
EI Bootcamp: Complete the YouTube EI course (2 videos/week) and apply 1 tip per day.
