Key terms and methods
language -> comprehension (skills to process and understand meaning of lang) + production (physically creating sounds)
sound input from environment > acoustic analysis (phonology/looking at phonemes) > word recogntion (morphology) > sentence processing (syntax)
phonemes
-
Voice Onset Time = delay btwn initial sound of voiced consonant and vibration of vocal cords - causing diff btwn phonemes ie "pa" vs "ba"
-
morphemes
-
-
-
one argument = "mental lexicon" - like a dictionary that gives lists and rules for morphemes/phonemes stored separately and what combo's alter meaning
syntax
-
yoda speak syntax - the fact it can still be understood (meaning) even if not grammatically correct - since still has syntax and implicit rules - one reason = understand the individual words but the fact that other word orders don't make as sense
pragmatics
-
eg turn-taking, what lang. appropriate for different settings, sarcasm
Methods
-
-
-
-ve:sucking procedure + head turn preference procedure assess perception of diff's but not really infant's understanding of words
Language Environment
Bilingualism
eg Kuhl - able to phonetically discriminate between phonemes of all languages at young age - then focus only on phonemes important for native language, babies are sensitive to distrbution of sounds
acquiring 2 languages simultaneously problem for bhvrst - but statistical learning theory link as some ability to acquire general langug. but focus on own lang. based on environmental input
Barac et al (2014) - meta analysis found bilingual children show strengths in some areas of cognition but inconsistent findings
child directed speech
-
-
repeated important words, slower speech, higher pitch, exaggeration
used since children orientate to it, pay attention, simplified structure = helps children learn syntax/semantics/pragmatics
-
not all cultures use, some use adult-directed, not universal (ie Mayan children in Shneidman & Goldin-Meadow (2012) , so not necessarily the "appropriate" model
