'White women and people of colour have always been suspected of performing excessively. In the comparison of femininity and masculinity, whereas the latter is seen as neutral, the former is seen as the gender of performance, artifice, spectacle and make-believe. From make-up and hairdos to cat-walking and sultry voices, being feminine is supposed to involve props, costumes and rehearsal.
