Food security and security
*Food security
:* when people have enough nutritious and affordable food to eat
Factors affecting food security
Climate: Higher temperatures and unreliable rainfall make farming difficult leading to less food available globally and the increase of global food prices
Technology: It can overcome temperature, water and nutrient deficiencies and increase the amount of food available in the form of greenhouses, irrigation and fertilizers.
Loss of farmland: The growth of the biofuel market is taking up valuable farmland which is then not used for food.
Pests and diseases: pesticides have increased crop yields.
Water stress: Irrigation systems provide water for countries with unreliable or low rainfall, although they have terrible environmental consequences.
Conflict: War forces farmers to flee their land or to fight in conflict. Food can be used as a weapon and crops can also be destroyed during fighting.
Poverty: when people have less money, they cannot afford food and they become unable to work.
Income inequality, rising unemployment and declining wages
Zero Hunger Goal
: ensure that all people have access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food and to end all forms of malnutrition.
Consequences of food insecurity
Climate is changing
Deserts are expanding and sea levels are rising
The arable land is being degraded
Pests and disease are spreading
Rainforests are dying, destroying biodiversity
Fresh water is becoming scarce and soils are rendered less fertile
Industrial explotación poisons our seas and rivers
Fish stocks are on the verge of collapse
Crop yields have again began to plateau
Possible solutions
Help breeders select beneficial traits and reclaim natural vgeriation in our crops
Improve methods to target resistance and defend against pests and diseases
Advance agriculture through genomics and phenomics
Inform farming practices and monitor crops in real-time
Reaserch fish species vital to agriculture and the health of our most important livestock
