WHAT IS IT?
the leader's ability to influence others to make day-to-day decisions that enhance the long term viability of the organisation while at the same time maintaining its short term financial stability
the organisation defines itself in terms of its task or purpose and the role of the leader within that organisation is to choose this task
in many ways, the leader must embody the purpose of the organisation in order to lend credibility to the strategy
in order to work properly, the purpose of the organisation must infuse the whole organisation
CRITERIA

the concept of the 'main idea' must reflect the organisation's identity sufficiently for people to be able to recognise and then identify with it

the direction is at the edge of what people already do or understand - it is not a complete change but a shift
3
the leader is credible in making that choice because they have had to make choices that are perceived to be similar in their past
4
the leader takes on the risk
5
the articulation of the 'main idea' enables others to begin to take up leaders roles
QUALITIES AND CAPABILTIIES
the leader must have a very good understanding of their organisation and the people in it
they need to understand
strengths and weaknesses of the organisation
capacity for change
the type of individual that such an organisation tends to atteact
