2.1) sustainable urban neighbourhoods
2.2) ecosystem services in urban neighbourhoods
What is an ecosystem?
A geographic area where a community of living things, including humans, animals, plants insects or bacteria.
Can be very big or very small. Each aspect depends on one another directly or indirectly.
Change in temp may alter types of plants
More predators means less food for them due to overfeeding of prey
Water animals move to other locations due to unsuitable pH in water
What ecosystems can you find in an urban neighbourhood?
Small ecosystems
Huge diversity of plants outside homes with insects and birds
Pocket parks with a few types of animals and plants living
Big ecosystems
Otters living in rivers with many types of plants or animals
Forests where animals and plants coexist to benefit one another
What are ecosystem services?
Regulating ecosystem services
Roots of mangroves trap sediments and filter the water to regulate quality
Plants regulate climate by providing shade and cool environment
Tree roots bind soil regulating soil erosion
Supporting ecosystem services
Water cycle providing organisms with a supply of water
Nature provides habitats for organisms
Nutrient cycling provides plants and animals with food, returning to the environment through decomposition
Benefits brought by nature to people. These services are produced by the living communities and non-living environments of ecosystems. Services can be:
Directly consumed (water and food)
Be experienced (natural scenery)
Contribute to essential conditions (regulating climatic conditions)
Provisioning ecosystem services
Plants and animals providing food and nutrition for other organisms
Fresh water bodies such as lakes streams and rivers providing drinking water
Nature provides different types of fuel like firewood, coal and oil
Cultural ecosystem services
Recreation done in nature to relieve stress and maintain physical and mental health
Some nature spaces can foster social belonging, group identity and sense of place
Some environments attract opportunities for tourism and aesthetic appreciation
