inspector calls
Mr Birling
drinking of port a shows wealth, "giving us the port, Edna? that's right" port would've been out of reach for people in the working class and was associated with wealth, due to its cost
he is keen to impress future son in-law, because by name dropping "finchley" he tries to show his class even though he is a lower social class compared to Gerald, Gerald is his social superior
-
speaks about opinions on economic future on country and flauring economy in other countries, seen as a floored, mislead and pompous man
refers to him self first as a "hard-headed business man" and after as a "hard-headed, practical man of business" , sees him self as how much money he has
lack of empathy for those that work for him as he is more focused on wealth, he says "a man has to make his own way - has to look after himself"
he is a capitalist which means he is in business to make money and that's it, he has to do things like "keep labor costs down", this view is only of the reasons for evas death
-
priestly uses lots of dramatic irony to criticize mr birling, as play was set in 1912 and preformed in 1945 most of things mr birling says at the start the audience knows is all wrong, such as "the Germans don't want war" and the titanic being "absolutely unsinkable"
finds out his son is an alcoholic and stole money from his business and then all the dialog after mr birling is souly focused covering up the stolen money and impact on business
inspector goole
name is very similar to ghoul witch makes it seems like he may be some character from the supernatural
-
-
inversion of generic expectations, most detective plays focused on narrowing down on the suspect whereas inspector goole shows they are all responsible for the death of Eva smith.
"each of you helped to kill her", representing the message that "we are members of one body, we are responsible for each other"
"because what happened to her then may have determined what happened to her afterwards, and what happened to her afterwards may have driven her to suicide"
Anadiplosis, where the second clause in the sentence starts with repeating the first clause of the sentence,
very fague description, gooles dialog often tells what he's not such as "i don't play golf" and "i never take offence"
-
some of the things he says come directly from priestly, such as "public men... have responsibilities as well as privileges" and "we often do on the young ones. they're more impressionable.
lack of subtilty when the inspector speaks directly from priestly, this is obvious on purpose.
reference to religion and supernatural , "fire and blood and anguish", this is directly referencing description of hell in the bible which is "blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth", although priestly message isn't religious its about good people going heaven and bad people going to hell
Edna
-
Says very few lines , Fewer then 30
-
ordered around the Birlings, many tasks she completes could've easily been done by themselves.
-
Mr. birling says to her "show him in here. give us some more light.", these two simple sentences are bluntly short and monosyllabic, suggesting no attempt at politeness
