Testing
HbA1c testing
A blood test that shows average blood glucose levels over the past 2–3 months. It reflects long-term diabetes control.
C-peptide test
Measures how much insulin the body is making. C-peptide is released when the body produces insulin. Low levels suggest type 1 diabetes; higher levels suggest type 2.
Autoantibody tests (e.g., GAD, IA-2 antibodies)
Blood tests that detect immune system markers attacking insulin-producing cells, used to diagnose type 1 diabetes.
Urine glucose testing
Old method to detect glucose in urine. It’s not as accurate as blood glucose tests and is now less commonly used.
Urine ketone testing
Detects ketones in urine. Important for identifying diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a dangerous complication of diabetes.
-
Lipid profile
Blood test measuring cholesterol (HDL, LDL) and triglycerides. Important because diabetes increases cardiovascular risk.
Liver function tests
Blood tests checking for liver damage or disease, important since diabetes can affect liver health.
Renal function tests
Blood tests (like creatinine, eGFR) that measure kidney function, crucial for detecting diabetic kidney disease.
-
Psychological monitoring (diabetes distress, depression)
Psychological monitoring for diabetes distress and depression involves assessing and tracking the emotional and mental well-being of individuals living with diabetes.
