The main hazards that river cause are FLOODING and EROSION
For people, the flooding can be temporary or permanent
The Hazards are
Loss of housing, forcing a move elsewhere
Lower house prices and higher insurance costs
Loss and diversion of transport routes
Loss of social, environmental and economic activities
Stress, injuries and death
A times of rapid flow, rivers can cause erosion that affects people and environment. Artifical levees may prevent flooding

Water for transport
Water for generating electricity
Water for leisure and toruism
People who don't live close to a river are also influenced by them. They may get water from pipelines and electricity from power stations using river water. Very dry areas may have a river flowing through them that has its source hundreds of kilometers away.
The river creates a valley which gives some opportunities

fertile soils for from flooding for farming
a flat, straight transport route for roads and railways.
