Red Power Movement (AIM) was directly modelled on the black power movement. It championed racial identity, resisting ideological oppression, and a love of one's culture. In 1979 they led a successful protest to siege Alcatraz Island, which lasted for 2 years. They also led the 'Trail of Broken Treaties' in 1972 which was a protest drive and march outside the BIA in Washington, and culminated in a week long siege of the building. They demanded the government make good on their promises, and hear their demands. In 1973 They also occupied the village of Wounded Knee, a site where Lakota people had been brutally killed before. The siege lasted 71 days and AIM only would leave when the government heard their demands. They had a membership of roughly 4,500.
