SPHERE model
.
The SPHERE (Social media and Public Health Epidemic and Response) continuum is a framework to understand how social media influences public health.
Social media can have multiple, sometimes conflicting, roles in public health across the following functions:
Contagion: Spreads harmful behaviors or misinformation (e.g., promoting tobacco, e-cigarettes, or false health claims).
Vector: Enables risky behaviors and disease transmission (e.g., opiate use, sexually transmitted infections).
Inoculant: Provides accurate health information to counter misinformation (e.g., public health messages to reduce COVID-19 spread).
Surveillance: Monitors real-time trends, disease outbreaks, and exposure levels (e.g., citizen science platforms, disease prediction tools).
Disease Control and Mitigation: Disseminates health-promoting messages, advocates for policies, and mobilizes resources for disease control.
Treatment: Enhances access to care and support (e.g., peer support for chronic diseases, mental health, and social isolation).
influencing factors
.
-
Attributes of health communications: Framing, content, language, sources, and platform characteristics.
Characteristics of the disease/pathogen: Social media activity spikes during pandemics or major health events.
Host properties: Sociocultural and political contexts, public trust, and the influence of online communities.
Social media can amplify misinformation but can also foster accurate consensus through decentralized networks.
