Rock cycle
-
Evidence
There are three types of rocks in the world and those are Sedimentary, Igneus, and Metamorphic. Those rocks form in different ways either through sediment build up, magma cooling, or lots and lots of heat and pressure .There are different ways that rocks can deteriorate and change over time. One of these ways is due to heat and pressure where the solid rocks turn into a consistency similar to play doh and when they leave the heat they
re harden and can have new different details like new crystals. Rocks can also tell us there history and origin like how did they form. Limestone for example is formed when coral dies and decomposes into a rock. They also can show us how safe it is to build a stable building on like sedimentary rocks are the weakest and can't hold up skyscrapers but metamorphic can because it is a lot stronger.
Connection
Making a pie is what I am going to be connecting to the rock cycle. To make a pie you need to start out with the ingredients. In my example it’s going to be an apple pie. For the apple pie you can make the crust or buy a premade one from the store which is what I normally do you can do the same with the apple stuffing on the inside. Then you need to assemble it by first putting the bottom crust on the bottom of the pie tin then put the apple stuffing in the tin with the crust layer now in it and lastly add a top crust then voila you just need to bake and then enjoy.
Rock Dating
Evidence
Fossils are one way that you can get a lot of information about how old rocks are. There are many different fossils where the animals come from different ages but with what we can tell when the dead creatures remains came from we can tell how old the rock is. Then there is relative dating where you can use different techniques to measure the age of the rock. One of the techniques is called stratigraphy which is when you look at how many layers the rock has which we can see that the lower the layer the older the rock is because it had to form first so the next newer layers are created on top of the original layer. Lastly there is absolute dating which is where you measure the radioactive decay of a rock. For example a 1000 gram chunk of uranium puts out around 13 million alpha particles aka (radioactive decay) per second! Which after it fully decays the whole 1000 gram chunk of uranium would take around 4.5 billion years. So we can measure the radioactive decay of normal rocks and plug them into a formula to be able to measure how old a rock is.
Claim
We can tell the age of different rocks in two ways: how many they have and how thick they are or by looking at fossils if a sedimentary rock which is relative dating. The other way is by absolute dating which is where you measure how much radioactive decay there is on that rock and the more decay the older it is.
Connection
My connection to rock dating is going to be about the layers inside of a pie. The bottom layer which is the crust is going to be the first layer because that's the supports that basically hold the whole pie together. The middle is going to be whatever you pick to be the pie stuffing which is personally my favorite part of the pie. This layer comes second in time. Lastly the top crust or the fancy design of pie on top is going to be the last layer you put on top and there you got a pie.
Plate Tectonics
Convection is where warm liquids and gasses rise because they are less dense and cold liquids and gasses sink because they are more dense than the liquids or gasses around them. There are different types of ways continental plates drift. The three are convergent, divergent and transform. The Convergent boundary is where the colder magma underneath the plate pushes the plate against the plate with warmer magma up above the other plate upwards. Divergent plates are when there is really warm magma in between two plates and it is rising up with a lot of pressure making the plates push apart from each other. Pangea was a supercontinent that had all of the land on planet earth combined as one singular land mass. It also is the best way to show continental drift as over time we were able now to trace and record how it separated and formed the world we have today.
Claim
The cause and effects of plate tectonics are that they have been able to show us a lot about how the modern world and landmass have mainly come to fruition.
For my connection to tectonic plates it’s going to be about now baking and eating the pie. When you bake a pie you got to be careful so that it’s not to hot or to cold. If its to cold it’d take a lot longer or possibly be undercooked when you take it out making it floppy and sink down. If its to hot the juices of the stuffing could either start to bubble over due to the stuffing overheating. Then when you get it just right you got a good pie and can dig in!
Introduction
The earth has changed a lot over time with lots of long events like landmasses completely being torn apart then put back together and then again being torn apart to give us the world we have. My connection to earth history is going to be pie. The reason I chose pie was because I thought it'd be an easy thing to connect to this topic. I will connect it to the rock cycle about how to make a pie. I will connect it to plate tectonics about baking a pie. Lastly I'll connect it to rock dating by the layers in pie.
Reflection
The best thing I learned about earth history is that there is actually a lot of science put into it. One thing I thought was that rocks just kinda popped into the world over time but now I know that they form in many different kinds of ways. One thing that is better about my Earth history project is that I planned it out a lot better than the Space project. One survival skill I need to work on is work since I do not use my time in class to the best of my ability.
