- - - - Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) was a French painter. He experimented with abstract forms and colors and was one of the first painters to create purely abstract works. In works such as Sundisc and Circle: Sun and Moon, Delaunay made color the subject of his paintings and used color to create form.
      - Delaunay took a pointillism approach to this painting. But it is composed with a checkerboard pattern, so that many small color points are framed into a large geometric pattern. In this way, the so-called "window of the city" is presented entirely in a kaleidoscopic world of blocks of color, which becomes a regular abstract picture. This is an authentic abstract painting, and Kandinsky's experiment with abstract expressionism was inspired by him.

        Cubism was one of the most radical movements of the Modernist era, an entirely new way of understanding art. At the beginning of the 20th century, Cubism, led by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, broke with the tradition of painting and replaced single-point perspective with a radical multi-point perspective. Their goal is to reflect the way the human eye really sees the world, not a static, complete picture.

        Georges Braque (13 May 1882-31 August 1963) was a French cubist painter and sculptor. The early works of Braque and Picasso were Impressionism and Fauvism. He worked with Pablo Picasso until 1914 to co-launch the Cubist painting movement.
        
        Glass on a Table
        
        Glass on the Table is a Cubist still life painting depicting a glass, two pears and a small box-like shape on a round wooden table. The piece is painted in warm yellows and browns with accents of blue, deep red and green (the predominant green of the glass may suggest the presence of water). The gray and white highlights contrast sharply with the burnt brown and black lines used to define the shape, while small areas of the primed canvas (originally white) are visible in the gaps in the flat surface.

        It was the first collage painted by Picasso, marking the transition from analytical Cubism (1910-1912) to comprehensive Cubism (1912-1916). He pasted a canvas with the pattern of a rattan chair on it and decorated it with a piece of real string, showing a slice of lemon, a cup, a pipe and a shell, with three capital letters on the left: JOU. Picasso broke the sacred sense inherent in oil painting, betrayed the traditional art medium, and made art for the sake of pure "art".

    - - Edward Wadsworth was an English artist, best known for his close association with Fortianism. He often painted coastal scenes, abstracts, portraits, and still lifes in temperate climates. Wadsworth was also an engraver of wood and copper.
        
        Edward Alexander Wadsworth (1889-1949) was a leading member of the Vorticists, signing the manifesto of that movement in the publication Blast in 1914. Vorticism was a style of strong solid forms and bursting energy that aimed to drive out all traces of the Victorian age. This painting is in tempera, a denser form of watercolour. The title is in Latin and may be translated as 'Leader and follower'. It is one in a series of paintings.
