How would increasing conservation funding for urban areas impact usage of public spaces in Springfield, Massachusetts?
To solve this problem they want to increase funding for more cigarette filters and try and fix smokers behaviors to not litter
Cigarette buds are a large part of waste and litter in urban areas. The buds are also very difficult to collect to dispose of.
This is kind of tied to the cigarette bud source. How they want to fix the behavior of smokers in Urban Areas to reduce litter of cigarette buds.
Some cities want to use Behavioral intervention so the people will stop littering.
This source mentions using a technique called "nudges" to educate people in urban areas and influence them so that their city could be a better environment
The article is connected because the to influence the people of these cities they need funding to do so.
The source actually mention smoking/ smokers specifically and talks about how the smoke pollutes the air. So not only the buds are contributing
It's not just the funding that can help get litter off the streets to make public areas more available but also just redesigning the system as a whole
A lot of plastic and garbage not only comes from citizens but inadequate waste collection. OECD
"Only 9% of plastic successfully get recycled" OECD
"This comment argues that the current recycling model in the United States is floundering from a lack of federal guidance"
How there is a towering waste problem in New York and the recycling system is so ineffective because there is a lag on the disposal of garbage. Link
Methane gas also gets leaked into the air due to the abundance of trash in land fills (global warming/ pollution) Urban Activist
There is a abundance of trash so much that micro plastics into the air
The question that both of theses sources ask is that is the program going to be offered in all communities or certain ones (richer communities)
Around 2020 is when New York cut the clean budget for parks by 84 billons dollars and there was sever build up of litter in New York NYT
-
There were less workers that were able to help pick up trash around the city parks (they were trying to keep up
-
One resident of New York said the trash build up got so bad that he got a trash bag and started picking it up himself NYT
In New York a group of kids made a bike powered food waste service that creates quality compost
"Community Ideas can help lead to a larger change" OECD
-
More programs like this can lead to even bigger changes. If the gov't got ideas from these programs and added more money there would be great impact (in a good way)
Methane gas get produced from plastics
Landfills and the build up of them are causing environmental harm like green house gases and production of methane.
Not only will not increasing conservation funding will leave public space under used and gross, but it will also worsen the environment.
They are using these techniques like nudging to educate people to stop or eliminate any negative affects on the environment.
