OPERANT CONDITIONING!!! - Skinner - Skinner created a box to test animal learning behaviour. The box was made up of a lever which, when pressed, releases food. Lights and a speaker were used for visual and auditory signals and the floor was an electric grid. In some of his experiments, if the rat pushed the lever he was given a food pellet, providing the rat with a positive reinforcement. In other experiments, if the rat pushed the lever it stopped the electric current from the grid on the floor, providing a negative reinforcement. In both cases, the rat learnt quickly to push the lever and repeat that behaviour.
Negative reinforcement - which is taking something bad away e.g. having a headache so take a tablet to get rid of it- taking the tablet is more likely to be repeated as it took away the bad headache
Positive reinforcement - which is getting a reward for behaving in a certain way so you are more likely to repeat that behaviour e.g. you perform well in a test so your parents buy you a new game, you are more likely to work hard to do well again because of the reward.
Punishment - This is not a form of reinforcement, this is receiving a negative consequence as a result of behaviour and making it less likely that you will repeat the behaviour. E.g. not tidying your room so your parents take away your PS4, this makes you less likely to not tidy your room as you do not want the same punishment again.
