The British at the Cape 1795
Before the arrival
Frontier expanded as European settlers took control of more land.
Trekboers moved into the area between the Sundays and Fish Rivers.
Expanding frontier is when 1 group begins to control more of the land.
This area is called the Zuurveld, means 'sour grass'.
Frontier: area of land where two different groups meet, & fight for control.
Sour grass provided good grazing for cattle and sheep in summer.
Without consulting the Xhosa.
Sweet grass provided good grazing in winter.
Dutch proclaimed the Fish River the frontier between the Cape & Xhosa.
Cattle could stay in the Zuurveld all year round
2 frontier wars between Xhosa and trekboers before British took over Cape.
Wars were about the land of the Zuurveld.
Both kept cattle, and raided cattle from one another living in Zuurveld.
British arrival, 1795
Cape perfect for sailors to rest & get fresh food and water.
Britain wanted control profitable sea route to East.
Battle to stop the French from taking the Cape.
Britain took over the Cape at the battle of Muizenberg.
Europeans expand frontiers
Western Xhosa, under Chief Ndlambe, then control most of Zuurveld.
1803: Cape back to Dutch, peace treaty in Europe, them and British.
Together chased most of the settlers out of the Zuurveld.
Dutch made peace with the Xhosa who were settled in Zuurveld.
Xhosa & Khoikhoi had been working for the Dutch settlers.
Peace in Europe did not last for long.
3rd Frontier War (1799-1803) was fought with British.
1806: Cape British colony again.
Cape remained a British colony for another hundred years.
