Germany
New country, formed by the unifications of the German states, following the Franco-Prussian War. Their main aims were to acquire colonies to gain power
Italy
New country - wasn't industrially or navally strong so it allied with Germany and AH to increase their power.
Austria-Hungary
Large empire consisting of many nationalities - main concern was the Serbs seeking independence within AH
Triple Entente
UK
Had a policy known as splendid isolation, where they would stay out of politics. They had a large overseas empire and didn't see the need to form alliances
France
Suffered defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Aim was to get Alsace Lorraine back. Allied with the Triple Entente to gain support against Germany
Russia
Largest and least developed of the 6 powers. Their man concern was Germany getting too much power and expanding into their territory.

Serbia became independent from A-H and many lingering Serbs in AH were keen to join, causing tensions in AH
Austria-Hungary had multiple large enthic groups within their borders, the strongest of which being Serbia
