To what extent would renovating playgrounds in parks of Springfield Massachusetts increase K-12 participation with the parks department and their involvement in activities?
Health Benefits
Public parks provide critical resources and recreation opportunities that can support the health and well-being of future generation (Lincoln Larson)
Not just afterschool activities are the only talking points for this- things such as public parks can also be utilized to better the lives and health of those we care for
Researchers have therefore emphasized the specific value of unstructured play in outdoor settings with respect to young people’s affective growth and mental health (Larson)
The physical and mental health of children are both affected by the outdoors- clearly a health benefit to them, and something that should be built upon for our future
Research shows being outdoors is among the strongest correlates of young people’s physical activity (Lincoln Larson)
It has been proven time and time again that these outdoorsy activities are good for those who participate in them, specifically children. Can use this to talk about how
Safety
Afterschool programs are an environment where students can go to feel safe and find staff and mentors who they trust. They also offer a space where students can express their creativity, find their voice, learn how to deal with challenging situations, and better understand how the choices they make will impact their lives and the lives of those around them (Rosenberger)
we can see that these programs are safety blankets for those who use them. Children like to have a place outside of home where they can have a sense of community and these programs are exactly that
Academic Advantages
Research indicates young people who spend significant time engaged in recreational activities outside of school typically earn higher grades, even after controlling for achievement test scores (Laureau)
Recreational activities that take place after school hours are proven to be good educational-wise and provides an increase in grades, including test scores
Studies have shown that students regularly participating in quality afterschool programs attend school more often, are more engaged in school, get better grades, and are more likely to be promoted to the next grade (Ardith Wieworka)
The afterschool programs are proven to be beneficial in an academic sense, displaying an increase of grades. With knowing this, it can be a solid argument to push for more of these programs, as the benefits are unmatched.
Research has consistently shown that students who attend after-school programs improve their reading and math grades. Students who attend enriching programs for more than two years have been shown to increase their math test scores by up to 20 percentiles. (AA)
Improved test scores are a plus for all no matter how you look at it- children are able to receive the educational help they need, and parents are satisfied with the scores their children are receiving.
-
There was a 70% drop-in crime rate from 2-6 PM based upon the children that rather participated in afterschool programs (Afterschool Alliance
A drop-in crime rate whether from adults or children is good, moreover showing why these programs should be more popularly utilized
More than 15 million students—including approximately 3.7 million middle schoolers —are alone and unsupervised between 3 and 6 p.m., the peak hours for juvenile crime and experimentation with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and sex (AA)
We need to attempt to combat this, because this is a widespread problem. With having such a dire issue in our country, afterschool programs attempt to combat it.
Counterclaim: Although it is true that some afterschool programs are not proven to be as beneficial as advertised, we have to take the good out of them and realize the opportunities they provide to many, along with the benefits which contribute to the growth of our community
<---Rebuttal
Some people did not want to send their children to afterschool programs, frankly because there wasn't enough evidence to prove a benefit on their attempts to reconstruct a better environment
