Week 13, Chapter 14
How to Use Systems Analysis
Identify Influences
Estimate the strength of the influences
Look at the interactions between factors
Find feedback loops that lead to changes in function
Feedback loops: can have positive or negative influence on behavior and outcomes
Identify bottlenecks
bottleneck: limits the effectiveness of the system
Identify leverage points
leverage point: identifies opportunities to improve outcomes
One Health
Human health is dependent on animal and ecosystem health
Zoonotic disease: diseases from animals that can be transmitted to humans
Can be caused by:
Viruses
Bacteria
Fungi
Parasites
One health is an umbrella for collaboration between different health areas
One Health Educational Framework
Microbiological influences on health and diseasee
Ecosystem health/physical environmen
Human-animal interaction
Reductionist Thinking
Looks at a singular factor or variable at once
"reduces" the problem to one root cause and one effect, which can limit our interventions
Can be helpful in certain cases (cigarettes and lung cancer)
Systems Thinking
Uses data to look at multiple factors
Can focus on the relationships between factors to make the most effective intervention
