Major Design Project: Carava, Major Design Project: Blind Spot Camera,…
Major Design Project:
Carava
ISSUE:
Negligence When Driving
ISSUE:
Driving Not Safe Enough
SOLUTION:
Warning Systems
Gap to car in front sensor
Lights indicating speeding (e.g. Green light = on limit +-2kph, orange 2-4kph out, red 5kph over or under), takes advantage of driver's peripheral vision
Heads-Up Display, either projected minimalistic on edges of windscreen or physical dials/head unit
Speed Limit
Approaching Road Signs (STOP, GIVE WAY, ROUNDABOUT)
Visual projection of road ahead,
very experimental using AI technology
Blind spot sensor
SOLUTION:
Educational Driving
Daily Tips
providing helpful information and educating drivers on road rules
MANUAL DRIVERS: Ideal RPM for shifting, current gear display (i would find it helpful to see what gear im in without taking eyes off road, find myself having to look down to shifter sometimes)
ISSUE:
Driving Not Involving Enough
SOLUTION:
Driving Data
Track and record travel history
Incentivise good performance with competitive aspects e.g. leaderboard
Reward drivers for following correct road rules and procedures with points system
Similar to
Strava
but for motor vehicles
Life360
perks, emergency contact, family sphere history
ISSUE:
Fatigued Driving
SOLUTION:
Sensory Awareness Methods For Drivers
Auditory Methods
Visual Methods
Positives
Greatly improves accessibility and ease of driving
Reduces chance of accidental speeding through visual, peripheral methods
Increases driver involvement in maintaining safe road practices
Increases driver involvement in keeping track of their driving record
Can act as platform; features can constantly be added and improved upon without significant added costs or resource use
Educates drivers on driving methods, tips, and promotes awareness
Negatives
Bound by legal restrictions around vehicle modifications in terms of innovation
Running costs can vary (constant evolution means constant variance of new costs)
May have adverse effect if done poorly; could distract drivers more
Requires learning some coding skills to implement technological features
Major Design Project: Blind Spot Camera
ISSUE:
Blind spots whilst driving, particularly for those with disabilities/movement issues
SOLUTION:
Innovative Blind Spot Camera
Features
Adjustable blind spot cameras on C pillar of car
Multi-cam viewer element featured within driver's field of view which will aid viewing their blind spots (aim is to not get drivers to rely on cameras for blind spots but to help if they can't move that quickly, car right in front of them risky to look back etc)
Helps with parking by showing park lines/adjacent cars through cameras
Positives
Possible within timeframe of HSC course
Everyday benefits to driving
In theory
relatively cheap and easy to produce for my scale
Specific demographic that has genuine need (mobility issues)
Negatives
Market competition
Not an amazing degree of difference
Varying, unpredictable cost (lots of contingencies, hard to plan around)
Major Design Project: Safer Airbags
ISSUE:
Airbags can lead to deaths/serious injuries when activated at:
Poor Angles
SOLUTION:
Automatically adjustable airbag angle/relocation of main airbag release
Use of adjustable mount which can be altered to angle airbag in an appropriate angle
Locked in place with notches to simplify calculations
Velocities at which the passenger's height/weight cannot withstand/not strong enough
SOLUTION:
Automatically adjustable airbag velocity speed
Use of scale + height-detecting camera which connects to a computer which calculates the appropriate velocity speed for that passenger/driver
Negatives
Illegal/Intense legal restrictions around modifying vehicle airbags
Expensive
Not adaptable; design would most likely have to change with every vehicle
Very niche; not a relatively large amount of deaths
Positives
If implemented correctly, would save lives from fatality/serious injury
