Working Against Binge Drinking/Risks Involved - Coggle Diagram
Working Against Binge Drinking/Risks Involved
Virtual Reality
Allows for realistic simulations of some effects of binge drinking
3D immersion ensures the scenarios experienced are incredibly realistic
Utilises scare factors and acts as a warning for all ages
Potential scenarios
Drunk driving/accidents
Alcohol poisoning
Mental health issues
Violence/aggression
Potential challenges
Scare factors added with incredibly realistic scenes can be traumatising or far too detailed for kids
Can be difficult to incorporate, especially with limitations in virtual reality headset availability
Would children willingly experience this? Would this need to be incorporated in education schools?
What is binge drinking?
Consuming a large amount of alcohol in one sitting
5 or more drinks in 2 hours for men
4 or more drinks in 2 hours for women
Blood alcohol concentration of more than 0.08g/dL
Usually with the intention of becoming intoxicated quickly
Social situations like bars, parties, clubs
What are the risks involved with binge drinking?
Accidents/Violence
Alcohol already significantly impairs cognitive coordination/judgement, but binge drinking multiplies it significantly
Can result in increased risks of falls or even car crashes
Can lead to significantly increased aggression, causing physical harm to others or themselves
Includes fights, assaults and potentially more criminalised activity
Strained relationships/uncertainty
Risky behaviours
Intoxicated people can result in engaging in behaviours one may not regularly indulge in
One may engage in unprotected sex, leading to other outcomes like STDs or unexpected pregnancies
Health issues
Liver
Repeated binge drinking leads to significantly increased risks of liver diseases
Every time the body processes alcohol, liver cells die, but cannot regenerate if it happens often due to the alcohol overload
Increases risk of fatty liver, cirrhosis, hepatitis
Gastrointestinal issues
Alcohol irritates the stomach lining significantly, affected even more through binge drinking
Can lead to gastritis, stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding
Heavily increases symptoms of nausea
Mental health
Contributes to alcohol addiction and dependance, creating unsafe habits and contributing to further binge drinking
Alcohol can cause significant drops in serotonin levels, which can deeply impact the way the brain regulates mood
Commonly results in other mental conditions like anxiety or depression
Awareness/charity events
Live or in person events that can feature sub-sections which promote alternatives to binge drinking and ways to stop addiction
Donations are offered in exchanges with some action taking place at certain milestones, encouraging it
Potential activities
Sports tournaments (running, high long jump, basketball etc.) to promote healthier lifestyles away from alcohol
Competition to create the best non-alcoholic drinks
Areas for mental health and other impacts of binge drinking and trained people to support those addicted
Workshops to teach people how to create non-alcoholic drinks/cocktails
Can work with other ideas like VR headset to further enhance the event
Mobile/smartwatch app
Allows user to track alcohol usage and manually input amount of alcohol consumed
Smartwatch companion app allows for vitals (heart/breathing rate) to be measured and calculate the effects of the alcohol
AI can use vitals data as well as manually inputted data to provide personalised recommendations on how to quit
Warns users about the effects of alcohol and binge drinking usage
Can detect if binge drinking is taking place and automatically provide recommendations on how to quit/why you should quit
Potential challenges
Existing apps already exist with similar purposes
Many apps with alcohol tracking, albeit not many other features
Difficult to market and promote with many other apps already existing
Video games
Utilising mapmaking in video games and storytelling to demonstrate the effects of binge drinking to teens with their favourite games
Demonstrate the causes and effects of binge drinking to warn teens about it and the causes of addiction
Inspiration from movie where a line between ethical dilemmas and reality needs to be drawn, but can be adapted to work with binge drinking and trying to stop.
Potential video games
Minecraft
Roblox
Steam video game
Geometry Dash
Fortnite
Personal relationships
Affect on relationships
Alcohol induces violence which alters behavior for the worse towards friends and family
Mental effects on alcohol consumption could lead to broken relationships
Possible unhealthy friendships formed through alcohol consumption and drug use
How friends and family can help
Positive influence and a supportive environment
Sets a good example for those in need
Provides help when needed
Negative influences
Bad friends who encourage dangerous behavior regarding alcohol and drinking
Peer pressure from friends and sometimes irresponsible family
Bad people pretending to be friends to gain something from the victim's problems, such as moeny or satisfaction
