Unit 3
DNA Replication
-
Starts with with topoisomerase detangling the DNA. Helicase then splits the DNA into two parent strands, and SSB proteins hold them apart. RNA primases makes RNA primes in the 5' to 3' direction. DNA poly 3 extends these primers in the same direction. DNA polymerase 1 then goes on to replace the RNA primers with DNA, and the ligase connects the strands to make a continuous strand
Experiments: Griffith - found that a killed S cell with an alive R cell would still prove to make disease cells--> What is the genetic material?
Hershey and chase - determines that DNA is the genetic material, not protein
Messleson and Stahl - determines that DNA replicates semiconservatively

Elements
Covalent bonding
Non polar covalent bonding occurs when both elemetns share an electron equally to satisfy a complete octet
polar covalentbonding occurs when one element unequally shares an electron, causing a partial charge in both atoms to form
-
key differences: cell walls, chloroplasts and beta glucose polymer bonds
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Ionic Bonding
Electrons are taken from element and is fixed onto another element, as the elements now have an octet
Plasma Membrane includes branched lipids, help create rigid cell structure, and become fluid when needed
-
Unit 2
cell signaling
-
-
Parts
Receptor
GPCR: Binds GDP, GTP, and activates Adenylyl Cyclase
-
-
-
-
-
Steps
- Reception - signal comes from o outside molecule which diffuse into cell of binds to a receptor
- Transduction - signal is amplified throughout cell through phosphorylation
- Response - signal goes to nucleus and causes coding or goes to target structure to cause a response
-
-
Mitosis
-
Prophase-nuclear envelope disintegrates, mitotic spindles begin to attach to kinetochores
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Golgi apparatus helps tag proteins and lipids to be secreted out of the cell and then be received by signal proteins from other cells
Connects to cytokinesis as microfilaments make up the ring that cleaves the two daughter cells, thus finishing mitosis
Connects with phosphodiester bonds as DNA polymerase 3 has to create phosphodiester bonds between the sugar and phosphate backbones whenever nucleotides are added to the chain
connects to cell signaling as cells receive external signals to begin creating a protein such as after the amplification phase of the signal transduction pathway
