Biblical leadership
Build an environment to grow your team
Develop a team culture that encourages growth, "What environment do the people in my team require, in
order to flourish
Encouragement, an attitude of praise and affirmation. "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." Hebrews 10:24
Are you developing them? Do you have a plan for them? Are they growing? Have they been able to lift your load?
2 Lead by example. Enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm. “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1
If you want your team to learn and grow then you must lead by example, positive environment, servant heart - serve them first!
Create environment Take Risks. “Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never
grow.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
Don't let them become overwhelmed by their failure. Gently pick them up, encourage them and instruct them
Understand how people are created by God. Ask yourself the questions: What motivates me?
How do I motivate others?
find what it is that motivates a person and channel the
existing energies that person possesses
Effective leaders ask questions: “Tell me about yourself”, “What’s your dream?” They know that if they listen long enough, people will explain how they can be motivated.
Expect the best of people. Believe they can! We behave according to expectation of others!!!! you cant build on negativity and weaknesses
when they do something well, acknowledge it!!
Provide lots of training opportunities,“What does this person need in order to grow?”
"Rejoice with those who rejoice". Romans 12:15
Applaud and rejoice with the success of your team members
Nehemiah Biblical leadership
Neh 6:16 And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.
5 times the enemy came, but he sought God for his strength to persevere
Weariness, discouraged, fearful, he encouraged to trust in the Lord who is great and awesome
allocated a variety of tasks to a variety of people and progress was made.
He had a real concern and compassion for people
rallied the people to his cause by passionately explaining the problem. faced constant opposition and ridicule.responded by declaring his dependence upon God
The first thing he did was turn to God in prayer. For days he mourned, fasted and interceded on their behalf.
opposition to Nehemiah’s plans (2:10) yet he refused to be side-tracked
God supernaturally opened the way for Nehemiah to pursue his mission and he was careful to acknowledge God in the whole process and give glory to him.
Lessons Learnt
A Heart for God’s Purpose: Neh 1:4 As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
Dependence on Prayer.prayed before taking any significant steps, from seeking the king’s favor (Nehemiah 1:5-11) to addressing opposition (Nehemiah 4:4-9).
Strategic Planning: Before approaching the king, he anticipated what he would need to rebuild the walls (Nehemiah 2:4-8). Upon arriving in Jerusalem, he surveyed the city at night to prepare a strategy (Nehemiah 2:12-16).
Courage to Act. boldly asked King Artaxerxes for permission, resources, and protection to rebuild Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:5-9)God is their ultimate protector and provider. .
Inspiring and Mobilizing Others. Teamwork. assigning specific tasks to different families and groups (Nehemiah 3). Encouragement. Neh 4:14 Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.”
Resilience. External challenges. Nehemiah faced ridicule, threats, and conspiracies, yet he prayed and implemented strategies to protect the workers (Nehemiah 4:7-18). Internal challenges. injustice and exploitation, ensuring fairness and unity among the people (Nehemiah 5:1-13).
Integrity. Servanthood. Leaders should lead by example, demonstrating humility, integrity, and selflessness.
Planning Meeting
who/where/when to meet
avoid dominating the group (draw suggestions)
Plan with flexibility (discussion flow, decision made)
Minutes of meeting (action points)
Ask simple / clear questions
Deal with difficult questions honestly
keep discussions on tasks
Take advantage of silence (10 seconds for thinking)
Closing remark - thank the group
Co-ordinate and conduct group activities
(2)Identify purpose (cause)
Why important?
Why should I be involved?
Why do we need thse things?
Why should be a top priority?
(1) Target Group: primary, secondary
What do they know: about you, about your church, about your relationship to your church.
What do you know about them? age/sex/education/background/opionions/interest/agree/disagree?
Group characterisitics, shared norms, traditions, standards, rules, values
external / internal?
(3) Develop a vision
stimulate action/innovation/creativity
Need to plan: an enterprise that is built by wise planning becomes strong through common sense, profits wonderfully, keeping the facts (Prov 24:3-4)
(4) develop measurable objectives
what will be accomplished?
how much will be accomplished?
when will it be accomplished?
(5) Objectives: realisitic, compatible, motivational
(6) identify activities - participation is key, innovation/creativity encouraged
(7) sequencing of events
Handling criticism
Tips: constructive vs destructive. Check what spirit, when given, why given?
Dont take yourself too serious - laugh at yourself - dont beat yourself up
Criticism: leadership, willing to stand apart, then expect it
look beyond the criticism, do you respect the person?
Jesus was criticised : samaritan, friend of sinners
dont develop a negative attitude yourself
Keep physically and spiritually in shape. Dont get Exhausted.
Building momentum
Consistency. “The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full
light of day.” Proverbs 4:18
Work for progress. Rome wasnt built in a day.
Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” (John Wooden)
returning exiles as they rebuild the temple after their return from Babylon
Aim for small wins. Zechariah 4:10 says, “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?
celebrate victories. energy enthusiasm for the next task.
When momentum stalled: Seek God, Return to vision/purpose. Introduce something new - is there a better way. Training opportunities.

Feel: Empathise.
Draws out information to help make informed decisions
Think:Analyse the speaks feelings "between the lines"
Say: Ask open-ended questions
Stop talking. Do not answer before listening.
Resourcing
Facility
Equipment
People (most valuable, skills, ability, interests)
Supplies
Time
Money
Resolving conflict
Out of control: damages relations, defensiveness, wastes time, fault finding, bitterness, resentment
Managed: builds teamwork, encourages open communication, resolves disagreements, deals with real issues, defuses anger, is God honouring
Resolution: (1) Pray, (2) Bring person involved (3)allocate time to talk (4) open-minded (5) treat with respect (6) listen (7) line up facts (8) non emotional

Needing Hope
“may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:0). And “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23)
The leader needs hope personally, and the people seek hope from the leader.
Hope grows when leaders see Christ and not just the circumstances. We live by faith and not by sight
that the outcome is always subject to his sovereign control. Faith and commitment must be regularly renewed.
Keep a list of blessings and successes. Thank God for them on a regular basis. Tell and retell these stories in the church it is a necessary spiritual discipline
it is inappropriate for us to wish we had someone else’s spiritual gifts. Assume that no one is better than I am for the place where God has put me
Biblical Success
Success is not measured by what I have. Mark
8:36 says, “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?”
Success is not measured by the people I know. Ecclesiastes 10:6: “Fools are put in many high positions...”
Success is not measured by how I look. 1 Sam. God looks at the heart, not our appearance
Success found in unlikely places: Joseph. David. Gideon. But God chose
the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; 1 Cor 26-29
“The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” (Judges 6:11-12) Gideon replied “But Lord, how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”
How to lose confidence.
Emotions. Maintain emotional capacity, full of love, peace, confidence, joy so you can give out.
Past failures. Ph 3:-12-14
Excuses, rationalisation, I dont have time, money, buildings, educaiton, ability.
Growing teams need growing leaders
All Leaders Are Learners. Leadership development calls for repeated assessments, opportunities, training
Ecclesiastes 10:10 is one of my life verses: ‘If your
axe is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is required; but skill will bring success.’ Translation: Work smarter, not harder. Application: You’re never wasting your
time when you are sharpening your axe.”
As leaders, there must be a balance in our lives of both input and output in order to stay fresh
Take responsibility for your own learning, design your program, read books, hold accountable, read outside your comfort zone, ask questions, seek expertise of others, listen, leaders should not always give answers whether you know them or not!
Growing Churches Require Growing Leaders
our personal growth keeps pace with our professional growth
Biblical Success
Success measured by wholeheartedness
Its not about miracles (eg John the baptist)
How to lose confidence: past failures, emotions, excuses, rationalisation
Be strong and very couragous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you, do not turn from it to the right or the left, that you may be successful wherever you go Josh 1:7
false measure of success: how i look, what i have, the people i know
Group dynamics
be accepted
have personal goals compatible with group
use their skills to assist
represents people outside
Working with difficult people
Reacting vs Responding: I can't choose how you'll treat me, but I can choose how I will respond to you.
React: relinquish control. Respond: take responsibility.
Romans
12:18, "If possible, so far as it depends upon you, be at peace with all men."
"A wise man controls his temper. He knows that anger causes mistakes." (Prov. 14:29 The Living Bible)
Conditions of Fruit Bearing
Reliance on God: Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He is like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes, its leave are always green Jer 17:5-8
Pruning:“He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit
he trims clean so that it will be even more fruitful.” John 15:2
Abiding in Christ: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear
much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
Remove distractions: Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that easily entangles, run with perseverance, the race marked out for us. Heb 12:1
Supporting people in hard times: youve got great skills, im sure youll find something soon, I know how tough it is, im here to support if you need.
