The Gift Exchange: On Christmas Eve, they exchange gifts. Della presents Jim with the platinum chain, only to discover that he has sold his watch to buy her the combs. Della's Sacrifice: In a moment of desperation and love, Della decides to sell her long, beautiful hair—her most prized possession—to a wig maker for $20. With this money, she purchases a platinum fob chain for Jim's cherished gold watch, believing it will be the perfect gift.
Irony and Conclusion: The story concludes with a reflection on their sacrifices, emphasizing the irony that neither can use the gifts they purchased for one another. However, O. Henry suggests that their love and willingness to sacrifice are what truly matter, likening their actions to those of the Magi—wise men who brought valuable gifts to Jesus.
