CARBOHYDRATES - Coggle Diagram
CARBOHYDRATES
contain large quantities of hydroxyl groups
produced by photosynthesis
made up of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen
the most common carbohydrates is GLUCOSE
CLASSIFICATION by different criteria
MONOSACCHARIDES
simple sugars
classifiesd according to the number of carbon atoms (4-6)
builging blocks of more complex carbohydrates
glucose and fructose
OLIGOSACCHARIDES
saccharide polymers containing 2-10 monosaccharides
occur as components of glycoproteins or glycolipids
SUCROSE: stored in plants which provides the source of commercial sugars
LACTOSE: found in milk of mammals and consists of galactose and glucose
MALTOSE: occurring in germinating seeds
POLYSACCHARIDES
polymers with high molecular weight
most of carbohydrates occur in this form
GLYCOGEN: stored carbohydrates in animals, abundant in muscle and liver
STARCH: stored carbohydrates in plants, it's found in rotts, rhizomes, seeds, stems and tubers
most abundant class of organic compounds
sugars
starch
major source of metabolic energy
produce energy on combustion
build human body strength
