LOVE ERRORS AND DIFFICULTIES
1. Finding the genre beats
Unlike other genres that have certain clear story beats, the love story is not a real genre; that is, it's a much looser form. Two people do fall in love, but how they get there can vary widely.
2. Not Providing a strong psychological and moral need for two characters
Both characters are of equal importance in the love story. So you must give both characters a strong psychological and moral need at the beginning of the story.
3. Not Creating a single story line when dealing with two people
A good story tracks a single line in which someone wants something. When two people each want the other, finding a single track of action steps becomes very difficult.
4. Not Showing why one person wants another
Desire in a love story is intense, yet the why (the motive) is deeply imbedded. For the audience to care about the love, each character must somehow turn those reasons into words.
5. Not Creating an ongoing, building conflict between two people who logically will have no conflict (for awhile)
When two people fall in love they are unlikely to start by fighting. Yet drama is conflict and the lover is the natural structural opponent. The fact that the lover, the object of desire, is also the opponent makes believable conflict and a clear sequence of action difficult
6. Not Finding a good story where there is usually none
Since story comes primarily from revealing hidden opposition, there is likely to be little "story" in a love story where each character tries to learn everything about the lover immediately. Also, in today's world, there are almost no outside obstacles to the love
7. Not Finding revelations where none are likely
If each character tells everything to the other, the revelations, the heart of any good story, disappear quickly.
8. Not Presenting psychological revelations
As the most intimate of all forms, love stories tend to have psychological revelations which are by nature extremely subtle. These are more difficult to show dramatically to the audience.
9. Not Having a final battle when each is clearly in love with the other
If the two characters are really in love with each other, it seems unlikely that they would have a huge battle to end the story, at least at this early stage in their relationship.
10. Not showing more than just the courting process
Courting is the easiest part of the entire process of love, but it doesn't explore the act of loving everyday
11. Not avoiding the usual self-destructive contract between men and women
Many love stories present a rich or powerful man seeing a beautiful woman, hunting her and taming her. Implied in this scenario is a contract whereby a rich man takes care of a beautiful woman, a contract which is likely to self-destruct for both people.
