dentify and define elements, compounds, and mixtures
Elements
Definition
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Example
hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine and neon.
The usage of each in daily life
the blood contains iron and the body is made up of a lot of carbon, hydrogen atoms
strengths and weaknesses
Strength:includes all trivalent and tetravalent ions including the rare earth elements, the platinum group elements, uranium and thorium.
Weaknesses:water,fire,grass
Compound
Definition
a substance made from two or more different elements that have been chemically joined
Example: water (H2O)
The usage of each in daily life: Sucrose (C12H22O11) in foods.
strengths and weaknesses
strengths:tranportation
Weakness:High carbon dioxide levels can cause poor poor air quality
Mixture
Definition: two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined and that may vary in proportion
Example: milk, salt and water, sand and water, etc.
The usage of each daily life: cooking, cleaning, medicine, and in industrial processes
strengths and weaknesses
Stengths: Mass of a solute in grams/Volume of a solution in litres
wekaness:sand also messy and easily tracked indoors
