Persons Statement
Paragraph 1
-
-
examples I could use:
Fascination with watching/ studying criminal cases, cases that public viewed to be unfair and why, cold cases and reasons they went cold
Moral side, ambition to go into a career in which can bring justice to people in dire times of their lives. Looking at reasons law was adapted/changed to better fit society
Having a genuine interest in British law and how it's created to protect society, looking at human rights and how these are implemented into our daily lives
Paragraph 2
What have you learned in your most relevant subject that has intrigued you the most and give examples. Why did you enjoy those topics? What further reading have you done?
-
examples I could use:
Evaluating certain aspects of the law e.g non fatal offences, consent and intoxication. Looking at how these defences suit/don't suit modern day society and how they could be reformed to better suit from the law commissioners
Human rights, specifically article 10 - freedom of expression and learning how different types whether its political/artistic etc have a higher protection and why they do. Which we have recently begun and has made me gain a heavy interest in learning much more
Learning about each case which all come together to make different laws/defences and then doing further research of these cases at home to better my understanding of them. For example when we learnt that in loss of control it can be a cumulation of events that lead to the loss of control -Ahluwalia- I found it fascinating looking into her case to see what these events were and what the outcome was
Criminal justice system; murder, manslaughter, theft etc. Gave me a further appreciation of the subject as I could truly gage the complexities that lie within the law and how important it is the law covers as many circumstances as imaginable in order to prevent loop holes (such as the double jeopardy law that we have recently covered regarding human rights)
Paragraph 3

-
Examples I could use:
Ethics:
Morals this subject teaches me as It allows me to adapt it to law to better my understanding as to why some people in cases we learnt/ different scenarios have committed the crime they have or why they have used a certain defence. It allows for me to have a different insight and think more about other people's perspectives rather than just assuming everything is with malicious intent
History:
We learn about horrific events in history such as WW2 and the Holocaust. This allows me to understand why certain laws are in place to prevent things like this occurring. Also, looking at America - with regards to the British Empire- and how they gained independence and wrote their human rights in this act, I like the comparison it gives me between our human rights and theirs.
Allows me to gain insight as to why laws were created due to the impact of certain historical events. It offers a sort of foundation. Opening my eyes to what violence and detrimental choices can truly cause and the significance of them and makes me determined to ensure justice is served to prevent anything like these events happening again.
Gave me confidence with debate skills as we regularly do debates in class regarding quite heavy subjects such as what caused WW2, who was the main reason for Hitler becoming Dictator etc
EPQ:
For my EPQ I am linking it to Law and History with regards to Jack The Ripper/ The Whitechapel Murders and how these resulted in change to the British Justice/Legal System and whether these effect were beneficial for us in modern society.
Paragraph 4
-
What extracurricular activities have you done in or outside of college. Any work experience? A job (what skills did you learn)? What are your hobbies?
Examples I could use:
Teesside Magistrates Court work experience. Went to work with a Criminal Defence Solicitor every day for a week. Went into trials with her while she defended her clients, sat through her interviews with her clients and took notes, observed her behind the scenes work with regards to trial preparation, went to her office after a day at court and observed her recording her work for the day and taking phone calls with clients
Currently working in Farm Foods. Gives me great confidence with speaking with and helping people from all works of life. This sets me up well for a career in Law, where I will have to connect with lots of different people be confident to be in a court atmosphere and have debates with other students confidently.
I enjoy football and played for my primary and secondary school teams, alongside being a player in my local side, Richmond Town Girls FC. This helped me to develop team work and communication skills and I found it a great way to switch off and relax with friends. I learned that communicating well both on and off the pitch and recognising when to give encouragement to my team mates in demanding situations was key to success.
Paragraph 5
Conclusion, what is your long term goal? What do you want to be? How will this course help you get there (ie providing specific skills and experience)?
-
Examples I could use:
I have always wanted to pursue a law career, especially after doing work experience with a lawyer. It fascinates me a lot. Seeing the reaction of clients she helped really motivates me as I wish to do the same and bring justice to those who really need it
This course will help me as it will offer me the skills I need when pursuing a career in law. For example, confidence when interviewing clients, confidence inside of a court etc as it will just help boost my overall confidence, especially when arguing with regards to the law.
whilst i am currently favouring criminal law, this course really excites me as it gives me exposure to all aspects of law in the firs year, with a view that i can then focus on a more specifc route as the course develops. I am open to learning about all aspects and seeing what excites me most ahead of choosing the more specialist route in year 2.
