Syntax - Coggle Diagram

- - - - An acceptable question to which the string of words in question might be the answer)
    - - It is/was X that/who Y
        If string of words an go into X, it forms a constituent
    - - If a string of words can appear as the topic of the sentence, then it forms a consitiuent
    - - X and/or Y
        If a string of words can be coordinated with another string from the same phrasal category, then it forms a constituent
    - - If a string of words form a phrasal category, then they must be a constituent
        
        NP can be replaced by pronounce
        
        VP can be replaced with slept or do/did so
        Meaning must change when replaced with slept, and meaning must stay the same with do/did so
        
        Intransitive verbs (e.g. sleep, sneeze) can be a VP on its own
        
        Transitive verbs (e.g. like, kick): Require one complement NP to form a VP
        
        Ditransitive verbs (e.g. give, send): Require two complements to form a VP (e.g. Mary [gave Bob a coin*]
        
        Sentential complement verbs (e.g. said, think): Require a sentential complement to form VP (e.g. John [thinks [Mary likes Bob])
        
        Preposition phrase:
        Can modify VP within a VP
        Can modify a N within an NP
