Argument: Needed by an argument-taking expression to form grammatical sentence (e.g. a verb [argument-taking expression] requires participants [the argument])
E.g. The girl and the blue ball in The girl kicked the blue ball

Arguments: Obligatory
No more than required
Cannot be freely ordered with respect to one another
Typically occurs close to the verb
Adjuncts: Optional (not required for the sentence to be grammatical)
Can have as many as you like
Can be freely ordered with respect to one another
Typically occurs after the verb
